Historic Designation

Congratulations Anneslie Residents!! Recently, our community joined a long list of national neighborhoods that are recognized for significantly contributing to the history and culture in their region. The Board has been working hard for the last several years to achieve this status for Anneslie, which became a historic neighborhood on March 12th, 2012. We hope to celebrate this recognition officially this summer. In addition to the national recognition, residents are eligible for the Historic Tax Credit. The tax credit is equal to 20% of the approved rehabilitation. Prior to starting construction you submit an application and get approval from the Maryland Historic Trust (MHT) and all applicable local historic preservation commissions, and MHT certifies that the work is consistent with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation.

For example, the total cost of your roof replacement ends up being $10,000, so you send MHT the final Part 3 application along with all receipts and photographs necessary to verify the expenses and that the work is consistent with the initial approval. If the Director determines that the project is approvable, you will be able to deduct $2,000 (20%) from the amount of Maryland State Income Taxes that you owe for the calendar year in which the project was completed. If you owe less than $2,000 in income taxes that year, you will receive a refund check from the Comptroller of Maryland.

The application must be filed and approved before any work is done, so any repairs completed before applying to the MHT would not qualify. Generally, any work that rehabs the historic significance of the house would be eligible, like replacing a slate rook with a new slate roof, but a new kitchen, vinyl siding or replacement windows may not be eligible. Part of requirement for application is the submission of a map, locating the boundaries of the historic district. Board Member Pedro Sales (psales@anneslie.org) and his wife have applied for a recent project and have produced such a map that they are willing to share with anyone needing it. For general information about the Rehabilitation Tax Credit Program or to check the eligibility of your project, please contact Bonnie Baden at bbaden@mdp.state.md.us or (410) 514-7628. For more information about the program, visit http://mht.maryland.gov/taxcredits_homeowner.html.

Anneslie Yard Sale

As you’re boxing up those winter clothes and making room for spring things, don’t forget to set aside a pile for the annual Anneslie Yard Sale. It will be Saturday, April 30, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Your cast-off clothes, shoes, jewelry, books, and children’s toys and games can be another family’s treasure.

Early birds start cruising the neighborhood at 8:30 a.m. or earlier, and they’re usually on the prowl for tools, costume jewelry, and other collectibles. Other popular items include children’s furniture, accessories, and small appliances. It’s a good idea to run an extension cord out to the front yard to demonstrate that appliances are in good working order.

Other helpful hints: label items with prices, or color-code with round “stickies” so that shoppers don’t have to ask about cost. Just list the prices on a poster: for example, red = $.10, blue = $.25, green = $1, etc. Clean items sell faster, and if you display them on tables or blankets, it’s easier for shoppers to browse. Start saving change and single dollar bills now. On the day of the sale, keep the money in your pocket or a “fanny pack” so it’s secure. Also, keep your doors locked. Several younger residents have set up successful stands selling lemonade, coffee, or cookies in the past.

The rain date will be Sunday April 29th. Use common sense to decide whether the weather is going to push the sale to Sunday. If it’s just sprinkling and you see neighbors setting up their tables, you can figure that the sale will take place on Saturday. If it’s a morning-long downpour, we’ll all wait until Sunday. For more information on the yard sale, contact Molly Glassman at 410-377-5834.

Didn't the Stoneleigh Pool just close, like, 3 weeks ago? It seems that way, but
Christmas and Hanukkah are definately upon us! This is a reminder of two
upcoming holiday events in our community that you should add to your calendars:

First, you don't need to battle the crowds at the mall just to visit Santa.
He'll be visiting Anneslie just before Christmas on Monday, December 19th, from
6-8pm. He'll be holding court at 519 Anneslie Road and would love to hear those
last-minute requests from Anneslie's good boys and girls.

Secondly, remember to bring on your outdoor decorating "A" game by the evening
of Wednesday, December 21st. That's when dedicated Board members will brave the
elements to tour the streets of Anneslie and identify the best of the best. Get
up those lights, inflate those inflatables, string up those garlands and
wreaths! We award prizes for the best in Best Traditional, Most Commercial, Most
Original, Best Theme, and Most Illuminated. Something new this year, in addition
to the coveted yard sign, winners will also be receiving modest gift card
prizes.

Scott A.
Are you aware of what's going on with a major community asset - Stoneleigh School?
<div></div>
It affects your home's value and desirability;
It impacts our children's education; and
It impairs the long term health of our community.
Stoneleigh Elementary School is significantly over capacity - with 131 more students than the school was built to educate. Overcrowding is disrupting the children's daily needs and education and is creating an environment of unequal access to educational resources. We are concerned that the safety of Stoneleigh students is at risk due to this overcrowding. No major changes are currently underway or funded for Stoneleigh. We have dropped in priority on the Capital Budget Request list!

A critical community-wide meeting is being held on:

Tuesday January 18, 2010 at 7:00pm at
Stoneleigh Elementary School, 900 Pemberton Road

Baltimore County Public Schools' Office of Strategic Planning representatives are attending. Please come hear how the county plans to meet upcoming challenges. We need a large community turnout out at this meeting. Even if you do not have children presently at Stoneleigh, please come to support your community at this meeting!

from concerned Stoneleigh Elementary School parents: Laura Lechtzin, Lisa Mathias, Marisa Sheingate, Jean-Marie Trivedi, Amy Godat, Jennifer Lew, Jamie Smith, Jodi Schuleman, Nicole Johnson, Beverly Hammer and Sarah Stockard
<div></div>

In light of the onset of Winter, the following suggestion from an Anneslie resident is a great one to pass on to the community:

When snow is predicted, the residents that have driveways, double up and put as many cars in your driveway as possible.

Residents living on the East-West streets (Murdock, Dunkirk, etc..), park their cars on the NORTH side of the street.

Residents living on the North-South streets (Holly, Edgewood) park on the WEST side.

This would make plowing easier and easier shoveling as well.”

Thanks!

Scott A.
One of my favorite post-Thanksgiving traditions is making turkey gumbo from all the leftovers. Justin Wilson gets credit for the recipe. I find the key is using bacon drippings to make the roux... and to make it as dark as possible. This isn't a simple recipe. I make it more because I love gumbo and Cajun food.

For the roux you need 1/2 cup baking drippings and 1 to 1 1/2 cups of flour depending on how thick you want it. To me gumbo should be thick so I tend to use more flour. This is the most critical part. You have to mix the flour and drippings in a heavy pot on medium heat and STIR CONSTANTLY as not to burn it. It can take 45 minutes to an hour to get the roux the dark chocolate color you want. It's a process, but worth it in the end.
You're also going to need a good turkey stock. You can make this from the leftover scraps and bones from the bird. Fill a stock pot with about a gallon of water, the scraps, 1 cup white wine, a large onion (chopped), some parsley, cayenne and salt. Let it cook for about 2 hours while you're making the roux.

If you can get past these step the rest is easy!

So your roux is now a dark chocolate color. Add to it, one at a time:
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped green onion
1 cup chopped green & red pepper
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley
1/4 cup chopped celery
Stir after each addition and cook until the onion is clear. Add one cup of your stock and make a thick paste. Add:
1 tbsp minced garlic.

Let it cook for a few minutes to blend the flavors then add the rest of your stock. Then add:
1/2 tsp crushed dried mint
3 cups sliced okra -- Justin says this is optional, but I disagree. Okra IS Gumbo.
1 pound Andouille sausage
Any leftover turkey
It's critical to get GOOD Andouille! I have an advantage here as my father-in-law is a butcher and makes his own that is beyond compare. Wegman's usually has good Andouille if you can't find it elsewhere.
Lastly, season your gumbo with hot sauce, and 1 tbsp of Worcestershire. Add salt to taste. If you didn't use the okra you can pick up some Gumbo File' to use as thickening agent.

You have to let it cook for at least 3 hours. I find it's usually better the second day. The recipe is a lot of work, especially after many have slaved in a kitchen all day on Thanksgiving. It works out well for me because my wife does most of the work on Thanskgiving and I spend the next day making the gumbo and getting rid of most of the leftovers!
